How can you protect your HVAC System from Seasonal Weather changes? Let the Pros from Comfort Solutions Heating and Cooling show you how.

Seasonal weather hits hard in greater Atlanta. Make sure your HVAC system is prepared!

Throughout the great State of Georgia, we get to experience an increasingly wide variety of weather changes. Some say that if you don’t like the weather in Atlanta, just wait five minutes. The implication of that old joke is quite often true in western Georgia, northwest Georgia, Metro Atlanta, and even heading toward central Georgia. As long-time rural Georgia citizens, we grow accustomed to temperatures going from pleasant to tortuous in a very short period. Hot as blazes one day. Freezing and rainy the next. Even worse than the toll on our psyche or our wardrobe can be the toll that the ever-changing Georgia weather can take on your home or business’s HVAC System. If you fear your Heating and Air Unit or system has been taking a beating from seasonal weather changes, we’d like to share some ways you can hopefully prevent your unit from going kaput, while helping you control the climate inside your home or business. If you’d like to skip the tips and secure one of our trained experts for an A/C inspection or air duct inspection, or you’d like to know how much an HVAC inspection costs, call or contact Comfort Solutions Heating and Cooling.

Make sure your HVAC system is clicking on all cylinders - regardless of the changing GA weather

Summertime in Georgia can be miserable. If your home or business has adequate climate control, you can find relief when you’re inside. But far too often, an AC unit will run continuously without making much of a dent in the climate inside where you are. Blown fuses, blocked air vents, leaks in your HVAC Unit’s refrigerant line, or problems with your duct system can all cause your HVAC System to be fighting a losing battle against the ravaging sun and humidity of summertime in the South. Winter brings cold temperatures and gray skies, along with snow and ice, which, as magical as that can look, actually can be quite dangerous, especially to your heating and air systems. It’s important to know how to protect HVAC components (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) from frigid temperatures this winter. Failure to do so can result in your losing your furnace on a cold day or your air conditioner not turning on again when the warmth of spring arrives. Here are a few ways that experts of heating and air conditioning in Douglasville recommend that you protect your systems this winter.

Protect your HVAC system by clearing summer debris or winter snow & ice

HVAC units require good airflow to function. Image them as people or animals that need breathing room to survive. Suffocating a unit with weeds, grass, tree limbs, debris, or even snow and ice can spell disaster for your HVAC System. Be sure to keep at least 18 inches of clearance around each unit, if you want optimum performance. This may require you to prune limbs or trim weeds in summer, and shovel snow or chisel ice away in winter. Otherwise, debris, weeds, snow, or ice can block the vents and prevent airflow. Remember that fallen leaves can also choke a unit when the fall months roll around. If you must remove debris or snow from the area around the condenser, take care not to hit or touch the condenser. Delicate fins and coils that make up the condenser can be damaged. You should also verify that gutters and pipes are not dripping ice or cold water onto a heater or air conditioning unit. If you aren’t comfortable with any of this activity, please don’t hesitate to call Comfort Solutions Heating and Cooling, and one of our HVAC System specialists will come conduct an HVAC Unit inspection, air duct inspection, or speak with you about seasonal HVAC maintenance plans offered by Comfort Solutions.

You should change the filters on your HVAC system - in summer or wintertime!

Continue to change your filters regularly, including the furnace filters and indoor air vent filters. Dirty filters can block your HVAC system and force it to work harder, especially as heat and humidity take a toll on your unit in summertime, and snow and ice make the unit colder in winter. This is especially important during the extreme portions of summer and winter when your air conditioning or central heat will be almost always running. Changing the filters once a month is a good idea, but every 6 weeks is standard practice. Use your discretion if your unit is in a particularly dirty area, or you fight debris, pet dander, or any myriad of airborne pathogens on the inside or outside of your home or business.

If your HVAC system needs work - hire seasoned HVAC service professionals

Just like heat and humidity in the summertime, snow, and ice or even extreme temperatures in wintertime can also cause other problems to your HVAC system, including clogged outdoor intake pipes, overheated parts, frozen exhaust pipes, and more. The risk of electric shock to yourself or damage to your HVAC unit is high if you don’t know what you’re doing. Instead of putting yourself, your family, your co-workers, or your property in danger, consider hiring a heating and air conditioning service technician to take care of this for you. It’s also a good idea to ask them to inspect your Heating and Air System before the dog days of summer, or the first frost in autumn. This will ensure that your unit is ready to work during the harsh winter months and face snow and ice. Experts on heating and air conditioning in the greater Atlanta area or the state of Georgia may have other recommendations for protecting your HVAC system, like investing in an air conditioning cover.
